Jake Wightman holds off Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen

Jake Wightman, 28, won the 1500m gold at the World Athletics Championships. He finished ahead of Jakob Ingebrigsten, the current Olympic champion. 

Ingebrigsten and Mohamed Katir from Spain were unable to beat the Scottish athlete who won the title in 3 minutes 29.23 seconds. 

Wightman, who is part of Power of 10 atheltics, was Britain's first runner in the 1500m since Steve Cram 39 year ago.

Wightman was cheered upon by not only the stadium crowds but also his father Geoff, who was the in-stadium commentator. 

Wightman was born and raised in Nottingham, England. He then moved to Linlithgow (Scotland) as a youngster.

He was named the 2013 European Junior Champion. Wightman set the Scottish record of 1000 meters in 2 minutes 16.27 seconds five years later. 

She attended Loughborough University, and was a participant in the 2020 Diamond League in Monaco. 

Wightman broke the Scottish 1500m record with a time in 3 minutes 29.47 second.
